Lion Inn Fun Day is a Roaring Success

In November 2008, Margie Hargan’s 2 year old son, Cormac, was treated at the Queen’s Medical Centre, having become extremely ill with meningococcal septicaemia meningitis. The affects of the disease can be devastating, but thanks to the treatment he received, 8 months later Cormac is fit, healthy, and full of beans!

As their way of saying thank you both for the treatment that Cormac received, and also for the way they themselves were looked after, Margie and her partner, Arwel, decided to hold a fun day to raise money for the children’s wards where their little boy was treated. The family opted to donate the proceeds of their fundraising efforts to NUH Charity, feeling that they would rather give to a local hospital with which they had a personal connection, than a large national charity.

The fun day was held at the Lion Inn at Basford and was a great success, with the garden packed full of families all day. As well as a bouncy castle, tombola, raffle, cake stall, stocks, barbecue, toys and clothes stalls, there were a number of local bands, who had given their time up free of charge, to play throughout the day. In total, over £2,000 was raised for Ward E39 and the Children’s A&E.

Margie explained their reasons for the fundraising initiative, saying, “There is no amount of money we could raise which would accurately reflect the value to us of making Cormac better. This amount is merely a small gesture of our enormous gratitude.”

On behalf of NUH Charity and the staff of Ward E39 and Children’s A&E, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Margie, Arwel, Cormac, Cariad (Cormac’s brother) and everyone else involved in organising and attending the day. Your magnificent efforts and great generosity are very much appreciated.
