Nunn-raising for Neurology

July 24th, 2009

The competitors

In October 2008, Kerry Nunn (now 38) of Kirkby in Ashfield developed a large blood clot in her brain which required urgent action if she was to survive. Now, her friends and family have raised £3,000+ to say thank you for the treatment she received.

Kerry, who had been perfectly healthy, developed a headache which worsened significantly over the next two days. Tests at the Queen’s Medical Centre showed a large blood clot which had also caused a secondary brain haemorrhage, and she was diagnosed with the extremely rare condition, Venous Sinus Thrombosis. Kerry’s situation deteriorated rapidly and she was rushed for an emergency, life-saving, operation.

Thankfully, the operation was a great success and six months later, Kerry was almost back to full fitness.

Kerry’s husband, Mark, wanted to show his “utmost appreciation” to the medical staff at QMC for saving Kerry’s life, and so he organised a Mini Triathlon, consisting of a 500m swim, 3km run, and 8km bike ride. 23 family members, friends and colleagues took part in the Triathlon, raising a staggering £3,000+. The money has been split two ways: half to our Neurological Research fund and the other half to Wards D10 and D11 where Kerry was cared for.

Mark and Kerry present the cheque

Mark commented: “We could never repay the surgeons and nursing staff at the QMC for what they have done. They were unbelievable in every way. We all felt that this was the least we could do.”

We would like to say a very sincere thank you to Mark and Kerry, their family and friends who took part in the triathlon, and all those who sponsored them, and we wish Kerry continued good health.
