A very tasty £1,000 for ORBS

August 24th, 2009

The sun shone on Joan Charlett as she cooked up a storm to raise £1,000 for NUH’s Breast Institute.

Joan baked dozens of cakes to sell at the Barnstone and Langar Summer fête on 4th July, and then topped up the total by holding a barbecue for friends and family the following day.

The money raised by Joan will be used to help further pioneering ORBS work being led by Mr McCulley and Mr Macmillan at the Nottingham Breast Institute. ORBS stands for ‘Oncoplastic Reconstructive Breast Surgery’ and refers to the application of plastic surgery techniques to the breast. Thanks to this breast-preserving surgery, many women suffering from breast cancer can have the choice to avoid a mastectomy. Mr Macmillan and Mr McCulley rely on charitable donations to continue their research and the development of this valuable work, so Joan’s donation has been very gratefully received.

Joan’s fundraising efforts are set to continue for some time yet as she plans the production and sale of her cookery book, proceeds from which will be donated to NUH Charity for the same cause. Keep an eye on our website for more details about how to get your hands on a copy.
