Kelly Yeomans and her partner Tony Newman have raised a fantastic £750 for cancer research at NUH NHS Trust after climbing Mount Fuji in Japan. Their trip was action packed and full of excitment, leaving the couple with much more to celebrate than reaching the summit!
The pair, along with a team of 32 others, were collecting money for a separate charity but decided to raise an addition sum for NUH Charity as Kelly’s granddad was undergoing chemotherapy at City Hospital at the time.
Their climb started just after midnight on 20th July following an already exhausting flight and coach journey with only four hours sleep. The climb began at 7,000ft: a height which luckily Kelly and Tony were well acclimatized to thanks to their work as members of an airline cabin crew.
The weather was great, but the terrain less so: there were high steps with gravel underfoot and huge boulders which could only be tackled by scrambling over them. The pair began to climb higher, and altitude sickness set in with Kelly unable even to take sips of water.
As Kelly became weaker, the sun began to rise and the pair stopped to admire the view and take a short well-earned rest. Taking Kelly completely by surprise, Tony got down on one knee, produced a ring and popped the question! Kelly explained to us that although she and Tony had been together for eight years she had no idea he was planning to ask her to marry him but she was delighted to answer with a big, “Yes!” The excitement of the moment spurred the couple on and they reached Fuji’s 12,500ft summit after six and a half hours of climbing.
Everyone at NUH Charity would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and many congratulations to Kelly and Tony.
