Katherine’s Iceland experience

Katherine in Iceland

Katherine Howe has taken part in a ‘Discover Adventure’ trek across Iceland, raising over £1,500 for NUH Charity.

The trek, which took place from Saturday 15th to Sunday 23rd August took Katherine and her team from the active Mt Hekla to Landmannalaugar, and then south through the mountains to the permanent ice caps of Myrdals and Eyjafjallajokull. The extremely varied terrain and potential for adverse weather conditions meant that the trek was categorized as ‘tough’: it was only to be carried out by those with a very good fitness level following a period of extensive training.

Katherine described her time in Iceland as “fantastic”, although the trek was not without its greatly challenging moments: the Tuesday of the trip brought with it a trek across a mountain ridge in hail, rain and snow, with gusts of up to 100mph and the temperature barely above freezing. However, rather than being deterred by the gruelling conditions, Katherine has been inspired by her Iceland Ice Cap Trek, and  now has her sights set on Kilimanjaro for her next challenge.
