Sisters’ Hell Run for Charity

Two sisters have raised £1,450 for Nottingham’s hospitals after their brother was treated for a brain tumour.

Louisa Coyne and Angie Clayton handed a cheque over to Nottingham University Hospitals Charity on December 3rd, 2009, after taking part in a gruelling ‘Hell Run’.

Their brother, Darren Clayton, 36, from Silverdale, had an operation at the Queen’s Medical Centre to remove a brain tumour in July 2008. Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke and lost the movement on his left side.

Darren, who is a dad-of-three, was moved to Linden Lodge Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit, at the City Hospital, for more than three months and still returns for physiotherapy as an outpatient.

His sisters decided to raise money for Nottingham University Hospitals Charity, which helps fund patient facilities, equipment, research and training at Nottingham University Hospitals’ Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses, as a thank you for his care.

Angie said: “Linden Lodge have been amazing with the treatment and equipment provided and we immediately saw a difference.”

Louisa, 37, from Clifton, and Angie, 33, from London, completed the HellRunner’s Hell Down South Run 2009 on November 19th, in order to raise money for NUH Charity.

The run is held at Longmoor Camp, a military training camp in Hampshire, and is advertised as ‘nature at its toughest’. The gruelling 10 to 12 mile run is over varying terrain, including water-filled areas and steep hills.

Angie said: “We were looking for something different to do other than a standard 5km or 10km run and I was told by a friend about the Hell Run and decided it would be challenging enough to try and raise a good amount of money for the NUH Charity.

“We found it extremely challenging, especially with the very cold water areas that you had to run/wade through and hills of hell towards the end.”

Louisa and Darren handed over a cheque for £1,450 to NUH Charity at Linden Lodge on December 3rd.
