A couple from Nottinghamshire have raised more than £3,000 for Nottingham University Hospitals Charity after losing their granddaughter to cancer.
Pat and David Bassett, from Keyworth, have been fundraising for Nottingham’s hospitals for 18 years, since Pat’s mum passed away at Hayward House cancer care centre, at the City Hospital.
So far they have raised more than £46,000 for cancer wards at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), which incorporates the City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre, through their annual sponsored walks around Edwinstowe.
In May last year the family was hit by another tragedy when Pat and David’s 11-year-old granddaughter lost her battle with cancer. But they continued their fundraising campaign and presented a cheque for £3,230.15 to NUH Charity on Thursday, November 19.
The money was raised by friends and family members at this year’s sponsored walk, on October 4, and will go to the children’s cancer ward at the Queen’s Medical Centre, where Pat and David’s granddaughter was treated.
Talking about her 18 years of fundraising, Pat said: “It’s all to help fight cancer. Friends and family have all helped over the years – even dogs and children!”
David added: “The walks are done at a leisurely pace and people take their dogs with them. It’s a fun day out.”
Professor Richard Grundy, Professor of Paediatric Neuro-oncology at NUH, received the cheque and thanked the Bassetts for their continuing fundraising efforts despite their recent tragedy.
