The Mayoress of Rushcliffe is set to leap out of a plane in less than two weeks, in order to raise money for NUH Charity.
Deirdre McGowan will carry out the tandem skydive at Langar Airfield on April 13th, in aid of NUH Charity.
Councillor Peter McGowan, the current Mayor of Rushcliffe, named NUH Charity as his chosen charity for his year in office. Councillor and Mrs McGowan have so far raised around £9,000 for the Charity, with several fundraising events still to come.
Talking about her skydive, Mrs McGowan said: “I’m a bit scared but I thought it might be a good way of gaining a bit of money, because I don’t like heights and I don’t think people thought I would do anything like this!”
Mrs McGowan continued: “We chose the charity because our daughter was born eleven weeks prematurely and spent the first eight weeks of her life in the City Hospital, and we wanted to raise as much as possible. Even though it was 23 years ago, it’s just fantastic what they did to help.”
The couple’s daughter, Laura, is now a fit and healthy 23-year-old, who lives in London after graduating from the Birmingham School of Acting in February.
All money raised during Councillor McGowan’s year in office will go to the Neonatal Unit at the City Hospital.
Mrs McGowan has so far raised almost £2,000 from the skydive and will be supported by family and friends on the day, including her daughter.
“I’m glad she’s going to be there, because she’s the reason we’re doing this,” said Mrs McGowan.
Other fundraising events being arranged by Councillor and Mrs McGowan include a Charity Lunch on April 18th, a Golf Day on April 23rd, Flower Arranging and Afternoon Tea on April 30th, and Clay Pigeon Shooting on May 8th. All the events are open to the public, with a charge for tickets.
