Nurse’s thousand-mile charity cycle ride

April 28th, 2010

A senior nurse at Nottingham Children’s Hospital is taking part in a gruelling charity cycle ride to raise money for another nurse.

Angela Horsley, Lead Nurse at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, is cycling almost 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats, from May 4th to 16th.

She is taking part in the challenge to raise money for the post of Ginny McGivern, Complementary Therapy Nurse at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.

Ginny’s post has been funded by Nottingham University Hospitals Charity since 2006 and involves providing physical, mental and emotional relief for patients through massage, aromatherapy and relaxation.

NUH Charity enhances patient care at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses by providing added extras such as specialist equipment, medical research and complementary roles like Ginny’s.
Angela said: “I think the important thing is that Ginny’s role complements the medical treatment at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. The treatment she offers improves patients’ quality of life and provides symptomatic relief.”
Ginny added: “I offer patients a little bit of sanctuary, where they come away from the medical staff and they have a bit of control over what happens to them – they can choose what they want, such as a hand massage, foot massage, or just an hour of quiet time. It gives symptomatic relief, and it also offers some care and respite.”
Angela decided to take part in the bike ride to raise money for NUH Charity, to pay towards Ginny’s role. She has been training every day and says she is nervous but excited about the challenge.
“I’m going to be cycling 80 to 100 miles every day – it’s going to be very difficult but that’s the fun of it,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to it – I’ll see some fantastic scenery across the UK, and it’s all for a great cause.”
She will be waved off on her cycle ride by Ginny, who will also meet her at various points along the way to offer her shoulder massages.
Ginny said: “It’s quite moving that your senior manager is willing to do something like this for you. It’s quite humbling and overwhelming to have that support, and I’m extremely grateful.”
