Walk in the park for NUH Charity

May 5th, 2010

People in Nottinghamshire are being invited to take a walk in the park in aid of Nottingham University Hospitals Charity.

The Nottingham Orthopaedic Walk (NOW) is being held at the University of Nottingham campus Highfields Park and Boating Lake, University Boulevard, Nottingham, on Sunday 4th July. The walk itself is aimed at people who have had orthopaedic surgery and their family and friends, but everyone is invited to the event.

People can support the event by either taking part in the one-mile sponsored walk, volunteering to help or just coming along to enjoy the entertainment.

NOW is a fun family day out, with stalls, face painting, refreshments, live music and other activities available on the day. NOW takes pace every two years but has this year become a fund within NUH Charity.

Margaret Mayell, a retired paediatric surgeon from Woodborough, has been taking part in the NOW events since 1993.

She took part in her first walk after having a hip replacement operation in 1992. She has since had a further three hip replacements, a knee replacement and two operations on her spine, all due to osteoarthritis.

“I had to retire from work after my first hip replacement,” said Miss Mayell. “I didn’t want the operation to start with, because I loved riding horses and climbing mountains and I was worried it would stop that.

“But, after the hip replacement, I actually carried on doing those things and doing lots of walking, which is great. I was on crutches for a year at one point but I still walked long distances. I still walk two to three miles everyday, and that’s what NOW is about for me.

“I enjoy the day out – I usually take part with a friend and it’s a sociable event. Each time I go, I meet patients I’ve seen in hospital before but haven’t seen since. The events are great fun.”

Walkers need to register in advance by calling Amy Marshall at NUH Charity on 0115 9691169, extension 55935.
